This is a classic work of scholarship, written within living memory of the events described, by an individual that was wholly dedicated to the task of recording those events. I believe this work would be better in printed format, the Kindle edition doesn't have linked footnotes, maps, or, illustrations. More than half of the contents of this work are the footnotes, and they are almost as interesting as the work itself. The author's writing style is early 19th century, as was his life, as a result the narrative seems to lack a certain verve; he is no Shelby Foote. However, the author did interview some of the persons that participated in these events, as well as many of their descendants and other relations, in addition to reviewing official documents; as a result there is a definite note of knowledge of the events described, and there has generally speaking been no contradiction among subsequent historians regarding the substance of this narrative. Indeed, this work is often considered a prime source for information from the period when the Old Northwest Territories, were considered to include West Virginia, and parts of what are now Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and Ohio.

This is a narrative of life on the old frontier, it is all here, the personalities, the wars, the battles, and the massacres, acts of bravery as well as acts of depravity, that marked this troubled time early in our nation's history.

This didn't do much for me. I wish that it had and maybe when I might be in a better frame of mind it would appeal to me more. I didn't finish it.
Looking for my fathers family an this was good for that.
I'm so glad I found this version of the history I own in hardback. As a family history buff, I located this book years ago when researching the Cunningham branch of my mother's family and this West Virginia history tells among other things, the story of Phoebe (Tucker) Cunningham, who was kidnapped by Shawnees and held for ransom, was returned to husband Thomas, who became a Methodist minister. The Indian raiders slaughtered Phoebe's young children, including a breastfeeding infant, and yet she went on to have other children with her husband. Many other stories in this realistic history of Virginia/West Virginia. The version was free, and that makes it even better for me.
I found this very interesting. It provided me with a better understanding of the troubles encountered by the early settlers and the grit they had to have to battle their way through it. Some of the descriptive narrative is a bit wordy but I believe that was common for the time. Once you get accustomed to it, the book flows fairly well.
This intriguing 18th century American westward migratory book is filled with accounts of early state maturation efforts, Indian culture, and settler discovery. The book has many family names and supporting histories. The conflict between early Americans and Indians depict the essence of cultural contention, racial revenge, and territorial murder. Unfortunately, the index does not correlate well with the narrative. Part of the problem can be attributed to later footnotes. If the index is not of great importance to the reader, this migratory depiction will be delightfully insightful.
