So that was a bit of a doozy for me! Forever Road is my first read by Catie Rhodes. It is the start of the Peri Jean Mace Ghost Thriller Series. This was a bit out of my ordinary genre but I like to step outside my comfort zone at times, and I was interested by the suspenseful blurb. This book introduces Peri Jean Mace, a small town girl with the unusual gift to see ghosts. Most of the small town is aware of her gift, but chooses to see her a bit crazy. She does not have the best upbringing and relies on her Memaw and best friend Chase for anything resembling comfort. When her trashy cousin Rae is found murdered, it sets off a whole series of chaos and brings about many characters into the relatively calm life of Peri Jean. She is unprepared for the tragic turn her life is about to take!
With people from her past, angry ghosts, and the arrival of new town deputy Dean Turgeau, Peri Jean's life gets real interesting as she is thrust into the spotlight of her cousin's murder. This read is filled with clues and paper chases, people who are not who they seem, and a eerie tone of spirits as the author creates a suspenseful read. I admit that it got a bit tangled in my head at times with the progressing murder mystery story and the age old mystery of a family treasure hunt.
I found the story to be a bit complex. I thought it was written well and the author did a good job of keeping the reader guessing. Perhaps it was the many different characters or the back and forth story lines that didn't give anything away. I think I missed the romance of the read. The love connection that ensued with Peri and the Dean seemed to have been predictable but it lacked a certain intensity that I enjoy. I also found the character connections to be a bit superficial. I would have liked some inner thoughts or deeper emotions. I was just starting to really enjoy the tale at the 80% mark when the height of the drama and suspense was full on. Again, I found this book to be more of an introduction into the life of Peri Jean so perhaps it will progress with the suspense and the romance.
Overall, I think this was a good start for Catie Rhodes's new series. I can see many people coming to like Peri Jean and her tough as nails exterior. I am looking forward to her using her gift a bit more and also getting a bit deeper into her emotional side!

Forever Road Peri Jean Mace Ghost Thrillers Book 1 edition by Catie Rhodes Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
I have a bit of a conundrum when it comes to writing reviews. As an author I feel they are vitally important, to me, but I also understand reviews are totally subjective opinions. Thus, a book may receive a 5 star rating, and at the same time a 2 star rating. Opinions are like…well, you know…everyone has one.
As a reader, a review shows that I cared enough to express my feelings to the author for the time and effort spent writing the book. I do believe the whole expression of a review is to let others know, did I like the book or not. And, if I did, how much. I hesitate to get into the specifics of a book because I don’t want to give the story away. It’s like watching a pre-taped football game (which many are today) and someone screws it up by telling you the score before you get a chance to watch the game. With all that said, I really enjoyed this novel. A bit on the edge of the box for me, but I do tend to color outside the lines more than not.
The protagonist, Peri Jean Mace, is a scrappy east Texas girl that is bullied through her childhood years and stuck in a mental institution by her mother for a short period of time because she has the fortunate or mostly unfortunate ability to see and communicate with ghosts. Rescued from the mental institution by her Memaw, Peri Jean is raised to be tough, independent and a loner with a penchant for failed relationships.
The setting, Gaslight City, is a small town in east Texas with the typical small town attitude. It was perfectly portrayed. Having lived a number of years in a small town in Texas, the portrayal was spot on and humorous. The book centers around the brutal murder of Peri Jean’s cousin Rae, a wild woman not too far released from prison and Peri Jean’s commitment to find the killer…at all cost.
The story kept the pages turning and the reader guessing, in between bouts of laughter at the predicaments Peri Jean finds herself in, mostly of her own doing. The self-dialogue Peri Jean continually banters around in her head is hilarious, no-nonsense and completely uncensored, which is one of the aspects that made this a fun read.
The author presents a great debut novel not only in believability of the location and characters, but the story line is consistent in its ability to keep the reader entertained. The editing was super and thankfully the story had closure but masterfully left the door open for the next in the series. All in all I highly recommend this book to those who enjoy a good paranormal thriller.
I haven't had this much fun in a story in a long time. I say "in a story" because this book is written in a way that makes the reader feel a part of the story. The characters are so well developed that you feel you know them. And you feel like you get to know the town and the surrounding area like you live there. Often times a story so well detailed makes the reader feel like the story is slow and drawn out, but in the hands of Catie Rhodes, Forever Road moves along at a nice pace and invests time with each character.
Forever Road is a mystery at heart and the mystery drives the story. It has great twists and keep you engaged without sacrificing the story with cheap tricks. Peri Jean Mace is a strong female character who has inner strength and makes her own decisions. A fantastic character on par with Lisbeth Salander of the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo series. I can't wait to see what else is in store for her in future stories.
This book is called a supernatural thriller. I am hit or miss with supernatural stories, but Catie Rhodes does something fantastic here. The book is really a well crafted mystery with supernatural elements. These elements add to the story and enhance the drama, without trying to rely on the supernatural to move the story. It is creepy and an integral part of the character of Peri Jean Mace.
I felt I would enjoy this book, but was surprised how much I loved it. I was hooked and couldn't put it down. I finished the story with anticipation for future installments and a genuine interest in learning more about all the characters in the book, not just the main characters. Ms. Rhodes has done a fantastic job and I look forward to reading more of her work. This book is highly recommended.
